Man Arrested After Two-County Chase Ends in Crash That Injured Pregnant Woman

The 34-year-old man was caught when he crashed into oncoming traffic.

A Winder man is facing multiple charges after speeding away from a checkpoint and leading law enforcement officials on a two-county chase.

Access North Georgia reports 34-year-old William Jason McClure is facing charges of fleeing or attempting to elude police, driving under the influence and reckless driving in connection with the May 26 incident.

According to WSB TV, McClure did a u-turn to avoid a road check in Buford near Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Gwinnett County. After nearly missing a car, McClure then sped away leading authorities on a chase that covered several miles before ending in Hall County.

McClure allegedly wasΒ "making U-turns, driving on the wrong side of the road, running red lights -- the whole shootin' match," Georgia State Patrol Sgt. James Warren told WSB.

A trooper attempted to use the PIT maneuver to end the chase, but instead crashed his patrol car after McClure allegedly rammed him, the AJC reports.

The trooper sustained only minor injuries and fellow officers continued the chase, which ended when McClure crashed into a van carrying six people, including a pregnant woman.

McClure, according to the AJC, was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment following the crash. The pregnant woman was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment. Her condition was not listed.

McClure was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail late Sunday. He remains jailed without bond.

Sunday's incident was not McClure's first encounter with local law enforcement. In April of 2013, McClure was booked into the Barrow County Detention Center on charges of theft by conversion and driving while license withdrawn. In October of 2012, he was taken into custody on a felony charge of theft by taking.
