New Businesses, Tax Proposal and Racy Reading

A look at a few of the notable stories this week on Dacula Patch.

I was glad to see Frontera is coming to the Hamilton Mill area. I’ve never been to Frontera, so I have no idea if their food is any good or not, but I am glad to see another business going in the Kohl’s shopping center. That area is underutilized and really seems to be a prime location. I wish the Frontera owners success in their venture.

In other business news, Dacula will soon have its own gun store. My last gun purchase was at the store that used to be at the intersection of Braselton Highway and Old Peachtree. Maybe my next purchase will be at the Big Gun Armory. I am interested to see what they end up carrying.

“Shifting the tax burden” sounds nice and catchy, but the reality is that if one group’s burden is lessened, another group has to pick up the slack. Wouldn’t it be nice if politicians simply focused on reducing everyone’s tax burden? Plus, just as the tax digest has suffered from economic pressures, sales tax revenue can suffer as well.  Reducing spending should be the priority, not tapping unpredictable revenue sources.

I have not read any of these books, but I admit to being fascinated by the uproar they have created. From what I understand, they do seem a bit racy to grace library shelves.  I believe the Gwinnett County Public Library system probably made the right call on this. After all, you wouldn’t expect to find Penthouse or Playboy magazines at the library, why would anyone expect to find soft porn?

Dacula Patch columnist Ray Newman had another interesting column this week. According to Ray, “There is a strong government ideology which truly believes government must control the way everything is done in culture. The stronger the government, the more freedom is lost by the producers and providers. One of the ways centralized government controls is by taking from the producers and giving to the non-producers.” What is your take on this?
