New Taco Bell, Weird Phone Scam and Cute Prom Invitation

A look at a few of the top stories this week on Dacula Patch.

Apparently I am not the only one that is pleased about the new Hamilton Mill Taco Bell. Based on the traffic and the number of Facebook recommends on , a lot of Dacula residents crave that south of the border fast-food goodness. Thankfully, we will not have long to wait. The restaurant is expected to open in July.

This is probably the weirdest phone scam I have seen. It is honestly hard to believe that anyone would fall for something like this or that a criminal would actually believe someone would fall for something like this. As always, be sure to notify police of any suspicious activity including suspicious calls.

When I dropped my daughter off at school Friday morning, I saw what I thought was a really cute prom invitation on the football stadium fence. My prom was eons ago, but I suppose many of us remember the fun and excitement of prom season. I hope this young man and young lady have a safe and enjoyable time at the dance.

It is unusual to see six or so Georgia State Patrol cars in any one spot, but that is what happened this past Thursday. Thanks to my awesome calendar editor Kristi Palmer for the news tip. Turns out a trooper pulled a guy over and ended up finding 10 kilos of cocaine hidden in the vehicle. Great catch GSP!

In a sad, but beautiful service, retired GCPD K-9 Caleb was laid to rest on April 12. Caleb’s family and several other K-9 officers and law enforcement representatives were in attendance. These dogs are truly amazing animals and Caleb was no exception. He was apparently a wonderful partner and, after his retirement from the force, a much loved pet.

This really could’ve been much worse than what it was. An overturned, leaking gas tanker presents a very dangerous situation to emergency workers and citizens. Gwinnett County Fire and Police were at the scene making sure the danger was mitigated. Unfortunately, a substantial amount of fuel made it into a nearby stream. Cleanup continues this weekend and repairs should begin Monday. See  for details.

For those of you following this story, as of Friday there was still at least one employee who had not been paid despite repeated promises by the owner of the Hamilton Mill Ippolito’s that all employees would be paid within 24 to 48 hours from the time he and I spoke.

If you have not yet finished your taxes, better get cracking. Everyone has a little extra time this year due to April 15 falling on a Sunday and Monday being a District of Columbia holiday. Still, the clock is ticking. Have fun.
