Residents Can Learn How the School System Operates

A look at recent happenings in Dacula area schools.

Gwinnett County residents are encouraged to attend school board meetings to learn how the school system operates and to become more familiar with school programs. The Gwinnett County Board of Education currently holds meeting on the third Thursday of each month. The remaining dates for scheduled meetings of the 2011 Board include: Aug. 18, Sept. 15, Oct. 20, Nov. 17 and Dec. 15. Future meeting dates for the Board in 2012 will be set in January. Meetings take place at the Instructional Support Center (ISC) located at 437 Old Peachtree Road, NW in Suwanee at 7 p.m. All meetings, excluding any executive sessions, are free and open to the general public.

Gwinnett citizens are allowed to participate in board meetings by speaking before the board and by suggesting items for the monthly agenda. Interested residents should inform the Superintendent’s Office of their requests in writing by noon on the Monday prior to the scheduled meeting. Requests to speak at meeting should be mailed, faxed or emailed to:

The 2011 Board of Education members for District 1 (which includes the Dacula and Archer cluster) is Carole Boyce and District II (which includes the Mill Creek and Dacula cluster) is Daniel Seckinger.

  • The Gates Millennium Scholars Program is hosting an education workshop on Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Peachtree Ridge High School Theater. Read more about this event and register online here.
  • hosted a Welcome Back Picnic for students on Friday, Aug. 12 for students and families.
  • Schools in the Dacula area have scheduled the following curriculum nights:
    • : Aug. 18
    • : grades 1, 2, 4 on Aug. 18 at 6:45 p.m.
    • grades 3, 4, 5 on Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m.
    • : K-2 on Aug. 17 at 6:30 p.m. and 3, 4, 5 on Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m.
    • : K-2 on Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m.

In local college news:

  • The following Dacula residents recently graduated from Kaplan University: Randy Post, Christian Coons and Victoria Williams-Bryant.
  • The associates degree nursing program at Gwinnett Tech has earned accreditation through the Board of Commissioners of the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc.
  • Georgia Gwinnett College has named Dr. Darin Wilson as its first Director of Athletics. 
  • Georgia Gwinnett College recently received a gift of $50,000 from H.J.Russell and Company to assist the school in meeting critical needs.
