Robbery at Dacula Park, Toll Lanes and the 47 Percent

A look at a few of the most notable stories this week on Dacula Patch.

In one of two recent serious criminal incidents at Dacula Park, a 16-year-old high school student was allegedly robbed of his necklace and punched in the face by a male that had initially approached the student to ask for a ride. The assailant and his accomplice escaped leaving the teen with bruises, scratches and a swollen lip. This incident happened in broad daylight at the pavilion in the back of Dacula Park. Please remember to be aware of your surroundings when at the park and report any suspicious activity to police.

It was a report of suspicious activity that same day that led to the arrest of a juvenile and an 18-year-old Dacula teen on drug and weapons charges at the park. The teen had three bags of marijuana and access to a .38 caliber handgun. The investigation is ongoing and police say it is possible the two incidents are related.

If you are a relative newcomer to Dacula, you might want to check out this week’s three questions with Mayor Wilbanks to get a sense of how much the area has changed over the past few decades. Be sure to read the comments as well to see what our newly elected Gwinnett County Commissioner Tommy Hunter remembers from his early days in the area.

If you thought traffic on I-85 near the Mall of Georgia was bad now, wait until this construction project starts. Why the state thinks the toll lanes need to come up this far is beyond me. Seems it would make more sense to build them between Gwinnett County and downtown if they have to be built at all.
