Senseless Vandalism, Sign Thefts and Annexation Opposition

A look at a few of the most notable stories this week on Dacula Patch.

It is truly appalling to think that someone might have found this somehow entertaining or humorous. I sincerely hope the person or persons responsible are identified and made to pay for the damages. What happened at this house went far beyond a prank or simple vandalism.

Stealing campaign signs is not humorous either. It is a crime and petty behavior to boot. If a candidate is an upright, worthy individual, then they do not need someone going out and stealing their opponents' campaign signs. That is just silly and disrespectful to both the opposing candidate and his supporters.

In a move that came as no surprise to city officials, this past week the county formally objected to Dacula’s plans to annex a 157-acre tract of land into the city limits. Now the city and county will have to spend thousands of dollars to arbitrate the dispute. I had the opportunity to look at the plans for this development last week and they are impressive. If this project comes to fruition, it will bring a lot of money to both the county and the city and additional jobs to our area.

I was genuinely surprised that so many people left comments expressing disappointment about the new Waffle House location. I love Waffle House and I’m happy to have another one nearby. Sure, there are a lot of different types of restaurants that would be nice too, but we need more breakfast places and it is hard to beat a waffle, grits and hash browns scattered, smothered and covered.

With Rick Tanner’s closing, The Shops at Hamilton Mill is starting to look very empty. Ippolito’s is gone, Nature’s 5th Season is gone -- makes you wonder which shop will be next. It also makes you wonder why we would need another strip mall built right next door when The Shops has so many vacancies.
