Stowaway Dog Expected to Make Full Recovery

Dog found weakened and dehydrated after spending two days locked inside a tractor trailer.

A stowaway dog is recovering in a Lawrenceville animal hospital after a harrowing ordeal last month.

The dog, who has been named “Carolina,” was found inside a truck trailer containing supplies from South Carolina. The truck driver said he had picked up the supplies two days earlier and the dog could not possibly have entered the trailer at any other point. The trailer was not air-conditioned and the driver said temperatures likely reached well over 100 degrees during the time the dog was trapped.

The dog was weakened, hungry and severely dehydrated when rescued. She also tested positive for heartworms and is currently undergoing treatment. The dog had no collar and no microchip. She remains at the Lawrenceville-Suwanee Animal Hospital in stable condition.

Veterinary staff describe Carolina as a “good-natured” dog. She is expected to make a full recovery. Though the costs of her care have exceeded the limit normally set for strays, the staff elected to take on the financial burden of Carolina’s care.

Anyone interested in adopting Carolina can call the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter at 770-339-3200.  For a listing of other animals available for adoption, visit the animal control website.
