The Great Outdoors: Workouts, Road Races, Naturalist Activities and Biking

Want to get out and enjoy the great outdoors? Here are some activities in and around Dacula you may want to check out.

Need motivation to work-out? Join Operation Boot Camp Gwinnett for a free session on Thursday, June 23 and get a glimpse of the 30-day fitness and nutrition program offered by this group. First-timers and avid athletes are invited to participate. The group meets in front of the Hamilton Mill Clubhouse located at 1669 Hamilton Mill Parkway. This session will last approximately one hour from 5 a.m. until 6 a.m.

Run to support the Gwinnett County Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society on Saturday, June 25. This race is sponsored by Jackson EMC and takes place at 461 Swanson Drive in Lawrenceville. Race day registration is at 6:30 a.m. and the 5K starts at 7:30 a.m. Registration is $20 per individual or $50 per family.

Head to Town Center Park located in Suwanee at 370 Buford Highway Northwest and run in the 2011 Gwinnett County Fire Department 5-Alarm 5K and Fun Run. This race is scheduled for Saturday, June 25 starting at 8:30 a.m. Race day registration will be available if you haven’t pre-registered beginning at 7 a.m. Awards will be given in each age group as well as for the overall male/female, top firefighter, top officer and in the jogging stroller division. Refreshments will be provided at the finish line.

Stop in the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center located in Buford on Saturday, June 25 anytime between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and discover your inner naturalist. Famous conservationist Aldo Leopold will be present and families will work together to create a nature journal, practice outdoor observation skills and learn about the relationship between your life and a tree’s life. You will spend a majority of your time outdoors on the GEHC trails practicing naturalist skills. This event is included with the price of admission to the center or free for center members.

The Gwinnett Touring Club will be riding the Ronde van Winderen 100.5 km road ride Saturday, June 25. This ride leaves Apalachee High School in Winder at 8 a.m. and finishes at the same location. This is a no gravel road ride.  Contact the GTC for membership information.
