The Perils of Online Dating, Saying No to the Klan and Prepping for the Elections

A look at a few of the most notable stories this week on Dacula Patch.

If the commercials are to be believed, online matchmaking services are a great way to find your true love. I do not know what site this man used to find this woman, but clearly his date failed to properly identify herself as a “woman seeking a mark.” This story is just another reminder of why you have to be careful when dealing with anyone you meet online.

If the KKK was looking to generate some publicity for their organization, then mission accomplished. The Ku Klux Klan’s application to adopt a stretch of highway in Union County was met with immediate and widespread opposition. The Georgia Department of Transportation denied the application, but there may still be a problem. The GDOT denied this request primarily based on the fact the specified stretch of roadway was ineligible for the program. That is a good enough reason, but the GDOT went on to say "Encountering signage and members of the KKK along a roadway would create a definite distraction to motorists." To play devil’s advocate for a moment, I think you could say that for any group of people picking up trash alongside a busy highway. I’m assuming Klan members wouldn’t be out there in their white sheets, so what we’re really talking about is just a group of people picking up trash. What happens when the KKK puts in a request for another stretch of roadway? This might be a good time for the GDOT to revise their Adopt-a-Highway program to limit eligibility to certain types of groups.

No one likes a tax increase, but no one wants to end up with a revenue shortfall either. If the City of Dacula does not increase the millage rate, they will lose close to $10,000 next year. Sooner or later, the taxpayers will have to pay for that. City leaders have proposed increasing the millage rate to 5.703 to avoid that shortfall. If approved, that millage rate will result in a $103 (yes $103) surplus of funds. That’s a pretty tight margin.

I’ve been to a lot of forums. Some of them can be mind-numbingly boring, but this one was quite educational. I went into the forum not knowing who would get my vote on July 31. Now I know. I wish more people could’ve been there to hear what the candidates for the Gwinnett County District 3 commission seat had to say.

The November elections are important, but, for us, the July primary may be even more important. Both TSPLOST and the county commission race will be decided in July. Please take time to learn about the issues and the candidates and head to the polls on July 31.
