Threatening Statements, Holiday Crime Alert and Preserving History

A look at a few of the most notable stories this week on Dacula Patch.

Dacula Middle School Student Facing Criminal Charge After Allegedly Making Threatening Statements

The comments on this article were interesting. Several people seemed to automatically assume the school was overreacting. That is unfortunate, but also understandable I suppose given some of the ridiculous school issues that have made it into the news over the past few years. This case, however, is not like those in which a child gets in trouble for accidentally packing a plastic knife in their lunchbox or a water gun in their backpack, this was something entirely different. When a child is threatened, school officials must take steps to protect that child. Parents of Dacula Middle School students should be glad the school takes reports of threatened violence seriously.

For those of us who like to shop online, this time of year can be particularly worrisome. I cannot be on the lookout for the UPS or FedEx man at all times and frankly, even when I am at home, they hardly ever ring the doorbell (Why on Earth is that??). If it weren’t for my dog Buddy, I don’t know if I would ever be alerted that a package was on my door step (Buddy does not care for UPS at all and is only slightly more tolerant of FedEx). My mailman Ted is great though -- he always ring the doorbell if he delivers a package. Anyway, this is a peak time of year for package and mail theft. So, if you don’t have a dog on high alert or a great mailman like Ted, be sure to keep your eyes open or ask a friend or neighbor to help watch for deliveries.

If there was ever a reason to sign your daughters up for self-defense classes, this is it.  In almost all cases, a 14-year-old girl is going to be no match for a male several years her senior. Based on the police report, it appears as if she fought back but she simply wasn’t strong enough. There are several martial arts studios in Dacula. Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation offers classes as well. It could be the best money you ever spend.

County Approves Purchase of Fort Daniel Site in Dacula

The purchase of the Fort Daniel site is truly wonderful news for our area. Most people are not even familiar with the system of forts that was established along what was then the western frontier. This is a great opportunity for Gwinnett County residents and schoolchildren to learn more about our area’s history.

I hope you take the time to read Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks’ weekly updates on Dacula happenings. I learn something new from him or about him every week. I really appreciate Mayor Wilbanks taking the time to share city news and I hope you find it as informative and enjoyable as I do.
