Noteworthy Days Coming in May...

The month of May is packed with important events. Here are some of the noteworthy days coming up in May.

The month of May is packed with important events. Here are some of the noteworthy days coming up in May:

  • May 1 – May Day. This celebration originated in Europe and is still celebrated in some parts of the United States. May Baskets are made with flowers or treats and left at someone's doorstep. The giver rings the bell and runs away. The person receiving the basket tries to catch the fleeing giver. If they catch the person, a kiss is exchanged.
  • May 2 – National Day of Prayer. The United States Congress established the National Day of Prayer in 1952. Citizens are encouraged to turn to God for prayer and meditation. Please remember those affected by the recent events at the Boston Marathon and explosion in Waco in your thoughts and prayers.
  • May 5 – Cinco de Mayo. The 5th of May is celebrated in Mexico and many parts of the United States. Cinco de Mayo recognizes the Mexican Army’s victory over French forces at the battle of Pueblo on May 5th, 1862. This is sometimes confused as Mexican Independence Day which is on September 16th.
  • May 7 – National Teacher’s Day. National Teacher’s Week is celebrated during the first full week of May with that Tuesday designated as National Teacher’s Day. Please take time to thank our teachers who are helping prepare our next generation.
  • May 12 – Mother’s Day. You better not forget this one! If it were not for these wonderful ladies, none of us would be here.
  • May 18 – Armed Forces Day. This day falls during Armed Forces Week which begins on the 2nd Saturday of May and ends on the 3rd Sunday. Please take time to thank those who are serving in our Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.
  • May 27 – Memorial Day. We take time to thank and remember members of our armed forces who died in the service of our country. It is true that freedom is not free!
  • School Is Out! For many students, the end of the spring semester is finally here and summer begins.
