Severe Weather Event This Afternoon and Evening

Be prepared for a potential widespread severe weather event later today and tonight

Changed up this post to update you with information about a possible severe weather event for us this afternoon and evening.

The Storm Prediction Center has outlined our area as a High End Slight Risk for severe weather. Included in that is a 2% risk for tornadoes, 30% risk for damaging winds and a 15% for hail. Here is the SPC Day 1 convective Outlook

The Atlanta NWS office agrees and added this:
ALTHOUGH THERE IS STILL SOME UNCERTAINTY AS TO THE EXTENT OF THE SEVERE WEATHER...THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR A WIDESPREAD SEVERE WEATHER EVENT...PARTICULARLY IN REGARDS TO WIND DAMAGE.

By afternoon, the atmosphere will destabilize with the intense heating of the day, and MLCAPE values are expected to climb into the 2500-3000 J/KG range. MLCAPE stands for Mixed Layer Convective Available Potential Energy. CAPE is effectively the positive buoyancy of an air parcel and is an indicator of atmospheric instability, which makes it very valuable in predicting severe weather. Large CAPE is required for the production of very large hail, owing to updraft strength, although a rotating updraft may be stronger with less CAPE. Large CAPE also promotes lightning activity. Keep an eye on the upper air soundings later today.

The main threat will be damaging winds and hail. Please be prepared as these strong storms move though this afternoon and evening. If you looked at the radar right now you would see nothing around us, but don't let that fool you. Once we get into the afternoon heating, expect the activity to really crank up.
