Fall Weather and More!

I hope everyone has been enjoying the mild dry period we've been stuck in for the last several weeks. We had a wonderful fall like football weekend last weekend and temperatures are forecast to remain mild for the foreseeable future. I might even go out on a limb and say that we've seen the last of our 90 degree days until next year, and although another day or two is not out of the question, it's not going to be likely. I've been a little slack in posting lately due to the weather being kind of boring, but that should begin to change as we enter the fall season and with winter following no too far behind. Also, we are now in the peak period for the hurricane season so hopefully we'll see some tropical activity in the next several weeks.

What a change from early summer when we had more rain than we could use. Overall, the southeast is still drought free and some areas in Georgia are still above normal for soil moisture, and this is a good thing as we enter the normally dry part of the year.

This Week
As we progress through the work week, we will come under the influence of more wedge like weather as cool air from a NE high pressure system funnels air from the NE and the Atlantic into NE Georgia. This CAD scenario appears to move in on Tuesday and will be at its strongest during the day on Wednesday. Clouds and possibly drizzle/light rain may keep our temperatures in the 70's on both days, with our current daily normal highs and lows running about 83/60.

Upcoming Weekend
Don't expect a repeat of last weekend with those sunny fall like days. It is starting to look like showers will be possible next weekend as a cold front enters the state and stall somewhere over Georgia. Temperatures will remain slightly below normal over the period.

Tropics
After a very slow start to the tropical season, activity has picked up, even though we are way behind on tropical systems for this time of year. We might begin to see some moisture from Ingrid as it wraps around a high pressure system and potentially brings a chance of rain with it. Ingrid is coming ashore this morning on the coast of Mexico and will gradually move inland and begin to loose its strength. There is currently another area on the NW Caribbean that may become a tropical cyclone at some point over the next 5 days, and this will need to be watched for further development.

Winter Forecast
Coming up soon will be our forecast for this Winter season. I know everyone gets excited when we talk about winter weather and this year will be no exception. Some meteorologist are simply using analogs to come up with their predictions, and those may work in some situations, but that may only get you in the ballpark. There are so many variables to look at and consider, and we'll be doing that in the not so distant future.

Solo National Championships
I got back in town last Saturday from Lincoln Nebraska where I was competing in the SCCA Solo National Championships. There were 1053 of us competing for 40-50 National Championships. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) I had a repeat of last year and finished on the podium, but 3rd again, just 0.249 seconds out of 2nd place (I was 0.865 back last year, so I was closer!)

Here's how it works. There are two separate courses setup, an east and a west course. You get three runs on each course, your fastest time from each course is added together and becomes your finishing time, and any cones that are hit add two seconds to that time. There is no practice but you can walk the course. The winner of our class (E Modified) was again Jeff Kiesel and he has now won 7 years in a row. The same car was driven to a 2nd place finish by Jeff's dad, Mark Kiesel.

Starting off on the west course, I was a little tentative on my first run and was only the 4th fastest. But I did much better on the next run and was sitting in 2nd place. But my third and final run on the west course wasn't enough to stay ahead of Mark and I finished the day just 0.006 seconds out of 2nd place.

The east course was a much faster and longer course with more room for errors. I came out fast though and after the first runs, had moved back into 2nd place (fastest time from the west course plus this 1st run). But on the 2nd run, Mark Kiesel came back and pulled back ahead into 2nd place. I was able to narrow the gap on the 3rd run (their car was having troubles) but not enough to move back into 2nd. All in all, not bad, just not the 2nd place finish I was looking for. I'll just have to try again next year!
