Rain, Rain, Go Away. Come Again Another Day.

When will the rain end?

Have you had enough rain yet? If you answered yes... too bad! More rain is in the forecast all the way through the end of next week.

This has obviously been a very wet period, not only for us, but almost the entire southeast. The wetness started off in June and many locations in Georgia experienced one of the wettest Junes on record (here's a link to the full size graph above). Macon had its wettest June (and wettest YTD) ever with 12.15" of rainfall, or 8.19" above normal. Atlanta had it's 4th wettest June with 9.57" or 5.62" above normal. Here at DaculaWeather.com, I'm running 8.34" above my normal yearly amount through June.

And that was just the beginning...

Here are the rainfall totals for the first week of July for the southeast. You can see the sharp cutoff to the west, almost following the AL/MS border. To the east, copious amounts of rain in many areas, while a few areas missed out.

As we zoom in to Georgia, you can see that along the coast and in west central Georgia, rainfall amounts were not nearly as great as they were elsewhere. You'll also notice that central Alabama got the short end of the stick too.

Looking at north Georgia, notice the extremely heavy rain that fell in the northeast corner of the state. They have received several months worth of rainfall in a one week period.

We zoom in one more level to the metro area and you'll notice in greater detail how some got the very heavy stuff, and others didn't. Here in my area in Gwinnett, we were a little on the lighter side as compared to some of the surrounding areas. All of these maps are available here in an interactive format.

The latest forecast discussion points toward another week of significant rainfall for most of Georgia as Precipitable Water values will still be very high (see Sun around noon). Here are a few excerpts:

THE EXITING SYSTEM ACROSS NEW ENGLAND ALLOWS THE ASSOCIATED SURFACE BOUNDARY/FRONT TO ELONGATE AND STRETCH ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST. BEST PRECIP CHANCES WILL BE ACROSS NORTH GEORGIA. ANOTHER LONGWAVE TROUGH PUSHES INTO SOUTHERN CANADA AND THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY BY MIDWEEK AND WITH CONTINUE SOUTHERLY FLOW FROM THE ATLANTIC AND GULF... PRECIP CHANCES INCREASE AGAIN WEDNESDAY AND ESPECIALLY INTO THURSDAY AS THE TROUGH DIGS INTO THE OHIO VALLEY AND A SURFACE FRONT MOVES INTO THE TENNESSEE VALLEY. REALLY REMARKABLE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE GFS AND ECMWF THROUGH THIS PERIOD...THOUGH THE ECMWF IS A TAD DEEPER WITH THE WAVE INTO THE SOUTHEAST AND A LITTLE BIT MORE NEGATIVELY TILTED.

and finally....

SO IN GENERAL... IT LOOKS LIKE NEXT WEEK COULD BE A REPEAT OF WHAT WE SAW THIS PAST WEEK WITH SIGNIFICANT MOISTURE TRANSPORT OUT OF THE GULF. WILL WAIT AND SEE HOW THIS PLAYS OUT.
