Severe Weather Possible Thursday

A situation may be developing that is similar to the June 13th severe weather event that brought tornadoes to the metro area.

In my blog post on the 22nd I mentioned the possibility of a strong cold front approaching our area toward the end of the week. Well... guess what? We have a strong cold front coming. The afternoon Area Forecast Discussion from the Atlanta National Weather Service office in Peachtree City had this to say about late Wednesday night into Thursday:

NW FLOW BECOMES UNSEASONABLY STRONG LATE WED NIGHT AND EARLY THURS. LIKELY TO SEE A WEAK FRONT PUSH THROUGH EARLY THURS IN THIS PATTERN AND SEVERE STORMS NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION. STRENGTH OF VERTICAL WIND SHEAR QUITE STRONG WITH 0-6KM BULK SHEAR MAGNITUDES AROUND 25-35KTS AND 0-1KM SHEAR OF 15-20KTS 12Z-18Z THURS. PRE-STORM SBCAPE OF 2500-3000 J/KG PROGGED BY 12Z NAM AND GFS VALID 18Z THURS. TOO SOON TO PIN THIS DOWN BUT MAY NEED TO BE PREPARED FOR MORE SEVERE STORMS ON THURS... POSSIBLY SIMILAR TO OUR JUNE 13 EVENT.

Not that it matters as all of the Atlanta NWS met's are very good, but that discussion was from Steven Nelson, the Chief Science and Operations Officer for the Atlanta office, and he has considerable forecasting experience for our area.

If you remember, June 13th was the date of the two tornadoes that touched down just to our west in Cobb and Cherokee counties.
We'll be monitoring this next system and bring you updates as Thursday gets closer.
