Mr. Howard Samuel Harper, age 76, of Buford, passed away on Monday, April 11, 2011. He was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Harper; mother, Willie Mae Cleghorn; brothers, Charles Harper Sr. and Kenneth Harper; and sister, Laverne Chadwick.

He is survived by his nieces, Nancy and Amos Clark Jr. of Hoschton, Linda Stewart of Lawrenceville and Joy and Russell Starrett of Lavonia; nephew, Charles William Harper, Jr. and wife, Barbara of Buford; niece, Ann and Hugh Hamil of Gainesville and several great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

Mr. Harper was born July 27, 1934 and was a native of Gwinnett County. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Buford.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home with Rev. Cecil Ash officiating. Interment followed at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Buford.

Mattie Cheek Kilgore

Mattie Rebecca Cheek Kilgore of Buford died Saturday, April 9, 2011, at the age of 95, after a brief illness. She was born in Buford, Georgia, June 5, 1915.

She was predeceased by her husband, John C. (J. C.) Kilgore; her parents, Jesse Anderson Cheek and Adell Effie Hayes Cheek; her daughter, Betty Jane Kilgore Risley; and all her brothers and sisters: Grady Cheek, Lester Cheek, Belle Cheek Malcolm, Clifford Cheek, Sam Cheek, Ernest Cheek, Winford Cheek, Bonnie Cheek, Burma Cheek Buice and Lillian Cheek Craig.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jery Neal Kilgore and Betsy Wood Kilgore; grandchildren, Amy Suzanne Kilgore Cochran (Stephen), Derrick Neal Kilgore (Kori), John Parker Risley (Christina), and Hellyn R. Biedinger Ellerbee; along with several great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 10, at the Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel. Interment followed at the cemetery of Zion Hill Baptist Church, where she was a member her entire adult life.
