Guns Don't Kill, Lawbreakers Do

Criminals and psychopathic murderers find a way to commit their heinous deeds.

The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution says: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” That is a clear statement regarding the freedom for the citizens to own a gun.

At a time when the nation is in mourning as a result of the heinous crimes in the multiple murders of innocent children in Connecticut, the big government crowd, wanting to never let a crisis go to waste, sees this as the time to disarm law abiding citizens. The vast number of laws broken by the person killing those precious children and some of their teachers could not possibly be made right in order to bring back any of those killed or stop someone from breaking them again just by passing stricter gun laws. There is no one in their right mind who does not mourn the loss of those lives. Not knowing any of the people personally has not stopped me and millions of others from mourning their loss and praying that nothing like that will ever happen again. Disarming law abiding citizens is not, and will never be the answer, however.

Criminals and psychopathic murderers find a way to commit their heinous deeds. Laws mean nothing to the lawless person determined to carry out their terrible actions. Removing guns from citizens who never have or never will commit a crime is not the answer. With the current trajectory of our country moving closer to giving government more control of each life and control of every decision individuals make, we must decide the best way to keep our freedoms is not to surrender any more of them to government regulations.

Media reports are coming from Washington that the Attorney General of the United States does not have the same opinion about the Second Amendment as have the majority of the citizens and former attorneys general. Eric Holder is reported to have said that the Second Amendment does not allow for the citizens to own and use guns.

As this column is being written, Vice President Joe Biden is tasked with developing recommendations for legislation that will be presented to the House and Senate in order to bring about stronger laws on gun control. Any legislation that brings about removing guns from their legal owners with stronger big government regulations and control will not solve the problem but will create a more lawless culture than we have now.

Indeed, rules and laws must be in place by which all will agree to follow when a person obtains a gun, but to place stricter laws on the books will not keep a person who is determined to break the law from doing so. There must be certain and swift judgment of any person who commits a crime. From where I stand, the Second Amendment has served this nation well and must be affirmed going forward.
