Sheriff Conway Encourages 'All Law Abiding' Citizens to Acquire Firearm Skills

Conway posts a statement in response to "many" emails.

Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway has released a statement in support of citizens' right to legally use firearms.

"I encourage all law abiding citizens to acquire and maintain the skills to safely carry a firearm in order to protect themselves and others," the statement reads.

Conway issued the statement under the heading "The 2nd Amendment." The U.S Constitution's Second Amendment says, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Also, it was in response to "the many emails received," the website states. The statement comes just over a month after the Dec. 14, 2012, shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., that killed 20 students and six adults.

"Sadly, our society contains those that will harm others when given the opportunity. An armed citizen certainly presents much less opportunity to those that would do them harm," Conway's statement concluded.

Absolutely ! Great job, we need all of our Sheriff's to come together with the other Sheriffs(and citizens) across the country who are willing to take a stand for our rights and defending our Constitution. We need more truth, more integrity, people who are willing to do what is right! Great job Sheriff Conway!!

I am a native Hog Mountaineer, but live across the line in Barrow now. I hope Sheriff Smith has and will come out with similar views as Sheriff Conway..

I agree with all of Sheriff Smith's statements and would add that liberals would like to make the argument about different types of weapons and clip capacities as not being necessary for hunting. The second amendment was not about hunting it was about keeping the Government from getting to powerful and taking away your freedom and liberty. We the people are allowed to bear Arms to keep the government in check and when viewed in that light we should not be deprived from having access and ownership to the same types of weapons, ammunition and clips that the government has. Once the liberals get the camels nose under the edge of the tent with any type of restrictions on gun ownership they will continually add creeping elegance to that small change until one day we find ourselves totally disarmed and under the rule of a dictator. That is why our fore fathers left the Old Country and came here to start new and have freedom and liberty from king, rulers and others that would suppress our freedom. I say no changes no matter how small to gun ownership rules and regulations.
