Burglar Cracks Safe, Steals $14K in Cash

Dacula couple returned home to find the rear door of their residence had been forced open.

Gwinnett County Police are investigating a Dec. 13 burglary that may have been committed by a relative or relatives of the victims.

A Dacula man said he and his wife left their Paiute Court home at approximately 8 a.m. and returned home around 5:30 p.m. to discover the residence had been burglarized. The burglar(s) had apparently first attempted to enter through a downstairs bathroom window, breaking the outer pane of the window in the process.

"The suspects were evidently not able to gain access to the residence from such a small window," the officer noted in the report. "The suspects then went to the rear door of the residence and from the pry marks used the same tool to force the back door open."

Once inside the residence, the burglar or burglars forced open a locked closet inside one of the bedrooms and pried open two safes that were stored in the closet. One of the safes contained personal documents and $14,000 in cash. The other safe contained only personal documents. The burglar(s), according to the incident report, took the cash and left the documents behind.

The Dacula man told police that only his family knew where the safes were kept and that they contained cash.

A Samsung tablet and Dell laptop were also missing, but the Dacula man said he believes the laptop was stolen the week prior when one of his relatives was at the house.

A neighbor said she saw a red Toyota pickup truck at the residence around 12:30 p.m. on the day of the burglary. The woman said she recognized the truck as being one that belongs to a relative of the victims. According to the woman, the driver of the truck pulled into the driveway and blew the horn. When he did so, a man came out of the house and got into the truck.

The case is listed as active.
