Child Injured in Escalator Accident at the Mall of Georgia

Accident occurred near Macy’s department store.

A child was injured after falling on an escalator at the Mall of Georgia Wednesday evening.

The Dec. 28 accident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. near Macy’s.

According to Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services public information officer Capt. Tommy Rutledge, a small child fell from a stroller while on the escalator. The child, whose age and gender was not released, was transported to Scottish Rite Hospital for evaluation of minor injuries, Rutledge said.

Attempts to reach mall officials for comment were unsuccessful.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that children should not be brought onto escalators in strollers, walkers, or carts. Officials recommend using elevators when transporting a child in a stroller.

I am sorry the child got hurt and hope the child is okay. Had to be scary for the child. Now parents, we know better than to take a stroller on an escalator especially with a child in it. That is why there are elevators. Shame on the parents. If you don't know what the warning sign says, stop and read it before getting on.

I work at jc penney's at the mall and we are always telling parents not to take strollers on our escalators and even show them where the elevater is . But they still do it !!

My daughter and I saw this happen. The baby was a little boy, he tumbled end over end down the escalator in his infant seat... it was horrifying... I pray he is ok

That sounds horrible! Hopefully he is ok. Capt. Rutledge said the injuries were minor.

It all boils down to parents stupidity! I'm an escalator mechanic in Canada . I've seen some pretty horrific stuff. No strollers, single file, when you step off at the end do not stand there and look around. You could cause a pile up . Tie your shoes , hold the hand rail. Common sense to me
