Cigarettes, Lottery Tickets Stolen in Gas Station Burglary

Suspected burglar captured on video at another convenience store cashing in lottery tickets.

A burglar escaped with nearly $1,500 worth of cigarettes and $10 in winning scratch-off lottery tickets during a recent burglary in downtown Buford.

Police were called to the Country Store on Main Street shortly after 9 a.m. on Oct. 16 after the owner of the convenience store arrived at work to find the business had been burglarized. According to the Gwinnett County Police report, the door frame had been splintered from the impact of being struck.

The alarm for the business was inoperative at the time of the burglary as was the store’s video surveillance system. An inventory of the store revealed the burglar escaped with more than two dozen cartons and multiple loose packages of cigarettes including Newports, Fortuna and Marlboros. The total value of the stolen cigarettes was estimated to be $1,478.92.

The suspect also took numerous scratch off lottery tickets. The store owner called the Georgia Lottery Corporation to advise them of the theft and was informed that several of the tickets had been cashed at the Chevron station near the intersection of Buford Highway and Thompson Mill Road.

The officer went to the Chevron station and was able to review surveillance video that showed a man cashing the stolen lottery tickets. The suspect is described as a white male with brownish blonde hair, approximately 5-foot-10 and weighing 180 pounds. At the time of the incident, he was wearing blue jeans and a long-sleeved gray UGA shirt. According to the police report, the male arrived at the store in a red pickup truck.
