Dacula Man Arrested Three Times in Less Than a Week

Charges include aggressive solicitation and DUI.

A Dacula man logged three arrests in six days beginning with his Nov. 12 arrest for aggressive solicitation.

Charles Canady, 51, of Dacula, was released from jail later that day, but found himself in police custody again just four days later.

Just before 3 a.m. on Nov. 16, an officer on patrol noticed vehicle taillights in the tress off of Old Fountain Road. The officer stopped to investigate and as he approached the vehicle, the driver, later identified as Canady, reportedly hit the gas in an attempt to get his vehicle out of the trees.

The officer ordered Canady to turn off the vehicle. When asked if he were injured, Canady initially indicated he was not, but later claimed to have back pain.

Canady was unable to exit the vehicle from the driver's door due to heavy damage on that side of the car. The officer instructed him to exit on the passenger side of the vehicle.

"When I first saw the driver, I could see his eyes were bloodshot and watery," the officer noted in the report. "When he spoke to me, his speech was slow and slurred."

The officer called for a DUI Task Force member to assess Canady's condition. While waiting for the DUI Task Force member's arrival, the officer asked Canady what had happened. Canady, the report stated, said he had just washed his car and was "going for a drive to dry it off." Canady further explained he lost control of the vehicle and slid off the road. The officer measured approximately 130 feet of skid marks prior to the point of impact.

When asked how much alcohol he had consumed, Canady reportedly admitted having two shots of tequila "a while ago."

After the DUI Task Force Member arrived at the scene and completed his investigation, Canady was placed under arrest for DUI. Canady refused to take the state-administered breath test. The DUI Task Force member secured a search warrant in order to have Canady's blood drawn. After the blood was drawn at Gwinnett Medical Center, Canady was turned over to hospital personnel to seek medical attention for his back. The officer obtained warrants for DUI, improper lane change and driving while license suspended or revoked.

It took only two days before Canady was in handcuffs once more.

On Nov. 18, an officer discovered Canady soliciting near the corner of Auburn Road and Jim Moore Road. Canady was carrying a sign on which he had written, "Unemployed (looking for work) I have a broken or cracked rib. I need help! Thank you!"

The officer checked Canady's information in the crime database and discovered he was wanted for the DUI, improper lane change and driving while license suspended or revoked warrants obtained by the DUI Task Force Member on Nov. 16.

Canady was taken into custody and transported to the Gwinnett County Jail where he was served with the warrants and cited for soliciting without a permit. As of Nov. 21, he remained jailed. Bond is listed at $5,140.
