Dacula Woman Falls for Phony Ticket Scam

A man claiming to be with the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department called and told the woman she had to pay the ticket immediately or a warrant would be issued for her arrest.

A Dacula woman is out $347.15 after falling prey to a law enforcement impersonator.

On June 23, the woman received a call from a man identifying himself as a lieutenant with the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department. The man informed her that she needed to pay a speeding ticket fine on that day or a warrant would be issued for her arrest.

When the woman advised that she had not received any notification about a ticket, the phony lieutenant explained that she was caught on camera and a ticket had been issued to her using information obtained from her license plate.

The man asked for the woman’s credit card information in order to pay the alleged fine.  When the woman indicated she was not comfortable doing that, the man advised that she could pay her ticket by using a Green Dot Money Pak card.

While still on the phone with the man, the woman went to her bank and withdrew the necessary funds. She then went to CVS where she purchased a card with $347.15 on it. After providing the man with the card number, the man asked her to remain on hold while the transaction was processed.

Ten minutes later, a new person, who identified himself as the man’s supervisor, came on the line and confirmed the ticket had been paid but that the woman would still need to make a court appearance.

“Once [the woman] got home, she began to question everything that occurred,” the officer wrote in the report. “Upon doing some research, she realized the situation was a scam and the subjects were not in fact officers with the county.”

The woman attempted to get a refund from CVS, but was unable to do so.

The case is listed as active.
