Driver Catches Cop's Attention After Passing DUI Checkpoint Travelling 70 mph in 40 mph Zone

A post-midnight drive landed a Buford man in trouble after he reportedly sped by a DUI checkpoint in Dacula at an estimated speed of 70 mph.

Gwinnett County Police were manning a sobriety checkpoint on northbound Braselton Highway near Enclave Mill Court on April 15. While officers were checking cars travelling northbound, a car travelling southbound, driven by Steve Gosa, 50, of Buford, passed the checkpoint.

"I visually estimated the vehicle's speed to be 70 mph in a 45 mph zone," the officer wrote in the report. "The vehicle then crossed over into the center turn lane getting half of the vehicle in the other lane."

The officer gave chase and stopped Gosa's vehicle in the Publix parking lot at the corner of Hamilton Mill Road and Braselton Highway. 

"I advised the driver why I pulled him over and asked for his driver's license. He stated he was trying to get out of our way," the officer wrote.

The officer noted a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle and asked Gosa where he had been. According to the report, Gosa said he was coming from his house and heading to Quiktrip. He later changed his story and said he had awaken hungry and was going to Waffle House. Gosa reportedly denied having had anything to drink.

As a result of the officer's observations during field sobriety tests, Gosa was placed under arrest. He was booked into the jail on charges of DUI and improper lane change. He was released later that day on a $2,074 bond.
