Elementary School Briefly Evacuated Due to Odor of Smoke

No fire was found.

Students and staff at Freeman's Mill Elementary on Old Peachtree Road briefly evacuated the building Tuesday morning, Oct. 8, after an odor of smoke was detected near the cafeteria.

Fire personnel from Station 18 in Hoschton and Station 27 in Dacula were among the units responding to the call.

Gwinnett County Public Schools spokesperson Sloan Roach said students and staff were out of the building for approximately 30 minutes while fire crews attempted to determine the origin of the smoke odor.

"They determined everything was okay," Roach said. "It appears the smoke may have come from an air conditioning unit on top of the school."

The students returned to class at 11:50 a.m.
