UPDATE: Shots Fired at Apartment Complex, SWAT Responds

A situation involving an adult male who barricaded himself inside a Norcross apartment ended peacefully Tuesday morning.

A situation involving an adult male who barricaded himself inside an apartment complex on Beaver Ruin Road in Norcross ended peacefully Tuesday morning, according to Gwinnett County Police.

GCPD public information officer Cpl. Jake Smith said the incident started around 5 a.m. on Dec. 27 as a domestic disturbance call. Shots were fired at officers during the call.

Gwinnett SWAT officers were called to the scene. The stand-off ended around 9 a.m. when Kelvin Barefield, 43, surrendered to police.

"He was throwing stuff out of his window--big stuff, like fans--and saying crazy things," said Michael Diaz, who lives in unit 1103, directly across from Barefield's home. His cousin made the initial call to the police.

Diaz and his friends watched the situation unfold from his window. He said the man was "talking trash to police" and also saying erratic things like his mother was a part of the FBI. He was also talking about his wife of two years, making derogatory comments.

Barefield has been charged with five counts of aggravated assault, one count of reckless conduct, one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. No other people were in the apartment at the time of the incident.
