An Auburn man caught speeding on Winder Highway near Dacula last week ended up with drug charges before the night was over.

Gwinnett County Police stopped Ryan Chavis doing 60 mph in a 45 zone well past 2 a.m. on Feb. 10, according to the incident report.

The officer smelled marijuana as he approached the car, and asked Chavis if there was anything in the car that should not be there.

“Yes, sir,” he said, according to the report, then handed the officer a large handful of four packages of “green leafy material.”

The man told the officer “it was all for personal use and that he just likes that particular type of marijuana.”

Police also found a glass marijuana pipe, a metal grinder and a small wooden joint container.

Chavis was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of drug-related items, and was issued a speeding ticket. Chavis posted bond and was released from jail.
