UPDATE: Church Arson Suspect in Custody

Images captured by surveillance cameras showed man who was in the area of the church shortly before the fire was reported. Tips from the public led police to the man who subsequently admitted setting the church fire.

A person of interest sought in connection with a Friday morning church fire at Zoar United Methodist Church in Snellville has been located. 

"Thanks to the aggressive coverage by the news media and tips from the general public, police were able to locate the man labeled as a person of interest in the arson fire at Zoar United Methodist Church," said Capt. Tommy Rutledge, Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services public information officer, in a released statement.

The man, identified as David Wayne Stone Jr., 23, of Snellville, was picked up by Gwinnett County Police late Friday night. Stone admitted entering the church and setting the fire. He was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail and is facing charges of first-degree arson and burglary, Rutledge said. Stone was located after officials released images captured by surveillance cameras at a nearby business shortly before the fire was reported.

The fire was started in the gymnasium of the church. Investigators determined someone forced entry into the back of , and then intentionally set a fire in the kitchen area of the gymnasium. 

Firefighters arrived at the scene about 12:30 a.m. No one was there at the time and there were no injuries. Fire officials said a properly working sprinkler system extinguished the flames quickly, preventing widespread damage.

"The Fire Department takes the crime of arson serious and we are fortunate to have made an arrest so quickly," Rutledge added.
