Locked Trailer, Unlocked Car Targeted by Thieves

One of the incidents was captured on video surveillance.

Locks were not enough to prevent the Christmas Eve theft of a trailer parked behind Dos Copas.

Less than a minute after the last employee left for the night on Dec. 24, video surveillance shows a two-door passenger car park behind Dos Copas. Two males exit the vehicle and cut a lock off one of the trailers in the parking lot. According to the Gwinnett County Police incident report, the males enter the trailer and then exit. The males then go to another trailer and begin cutting off the locks. One of the males then backs his car up to the trailer. The two men attach the trailer to their vehicle and drive away.

The investigating officer located several of the cut padlocks in the parking lot and secured them as evidence.

Earlier in December, thieves found an easier target -- an unlocked car in Hamilton Mill. While numerous cases of entering auto have taken place in Hamilton Mill during overnight hours, the Dec. 8 incident took place within a 10-minute window early in the evening.

According to the police report, the Hamilton Mill resident said she parked her van in the driveway at approximately 6 p.m. The woman told police she left her purse in the van, but thought she had locked the vehicle. Ten minutes later, the woman’s husband walked outside and noticed the door to the van was open. The woman’s purse, which contained credit cards, cash and approximately $300 in gift cards, was missing.

The case is listed as active.
