Man Arrested for Solicitation in Hamilton Mill

Suspect allegedly tells officer he understands "why people want to shoot cops."

A Virginia man was arrested on March 15 after attempting to sell magazines in Hamilton Mill without a solicitation permit.

Police located Anthony Day, 15 River Reach Close, Portsmouth, Va., in the area of Hamilton Mill Parkway and Vista Creek Drive. An officer had been dispatched to the location in response to a complaint of a male going door to door in the area.

According to the arrest report, Day became very argumentative when asked if he lived in the neighborhood. When Day admitted he did not live nearby, the officer asked if he was in the neighborhood to sell magazines. Day reportedly replied “Maybe.”

Day was unable to produce any identification, but admitted he had a suspended Virginia license. A criminal database check revealed Day had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a prostitution charge. When confronted with that information, Day advised he was aware of the warrant but knew the arresting agency would not extradite. When the officer checked the warrant, the arresting agency confirmed they would not extradite on the charge.

The officer described Day’s behavior as “evasive and rude” throughout the encounter. Day allegedly cursed loudly at times and insisted it was his company’s fault he did not have a solicitation permit.

Day was placed under arrest and charged with soliciting without a permit. The officer also placed an identification hold on Day due to his lack of identification.

Another officer transported Day to the Gwinnett County Detention Center and later advised the arresting officer that while enroute to the jail, Day said, “I now know why people want to shoot cops.”
