Police: Large Hole in Dead Deer's Rectum Likely Caused by Possum, Not Satanists

A look inside the police reports close to home.

Less than a week after a pet donkey was shot and killed, the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office investigated another animal-related incident.

According to the incident report dated Feb. 19, a Winder-area man called the sheriff’s office because he thought a dead deer he found alongside Groveland Drive “may have been used in some sort of satanic ritual.”

The deer was missing eyes and feet and there was a “large hole in the rectal area,” the man reported.

Upon investigating the carcass, the deputy wrote:

“When I looked at the deer I could see insects in the eye sockets, which seemed to be normal for a carcass on the side the road. The feet had been cut off, which is often done to harvest the feet for use in projects, such as gun racks. The large hole … was likely done by an opossum.”

There were no gunshot wounds.

“It is possible the animal was struck by a vehicle and a person cut the feet off upon finding it,” the deputy wrote.
