Online Crime Reporting System Now Available

GCPD is the first agency in the State of Georgia to offer the citizens online police reporting system.

Residents in some portions of Gwinnett County may now use an online citizen police reporting system to submit reports of certain types of crime.

Police expect the $125,000 system to be very popular with citizens who have become accustomed to the conveniece of web based services.

"By providing this service we are better able to utilize our resources more effectively and provide enhanced service to the citizens of Gwinnett County," said Gwinnett County Police Chief Charles Walters in a released statement.

Over time, police believe the system will save the department and taxpayers time and money while providing officers with more time to take proactive measures to fight crime.

In order to use the online system, the incident must have occurred in Gwinnett County (in the case of identity fraud, it is only necessary the victim reside in the county), there must be no known suspects (description and/or name) or suspect vehicle descriptions (tag numbers), and no physical evidence to collect or process. Additionally, the incident must have occurred within Gwinnett County Police jurisdiction. If the incident occurs inside a city with its own police department (Braselton, Duluth, Lawrenceville, Lilburn, Loganville, Norcross, Snellville or Suwanee), that agency must be contacted.

Citizens who use the online system may submit a report immediately and print a free copy of the police report. Reports of theft by taking, entering auto, identity fraud, criminal trespass (vandalism or damage to property of $500 or less), criminal damage to property in the second degree (vandalism or damage to property greater than $500 with no danger to human life or involving a utility like water, gas, or power) and theft of lost or mislaid property may be reported using the new system.

To report a different type of incident or to have an officer respond to your location, call the non-emergency number: 770-513-5100.

Once the report process is complete, the system will display the message "Your online police report has been submitted" and a police report case number will be issued. Once the report is reviewed and approved, citizens using the system will receive an email with a copy of the approved report attached at no cost.

"The report will transfer into the Gwinnett County Police Departments record management system and receive the same investigation and statistical analysis ability as if the report had been filed by a police officer," said GCPD public information officer Cpl. Edwin Ritter.

According to Ritter, the Gwinnett County Police Department  is the first police agency in the state to adopt the new reporting tool.

"The web based reporting option will allow officers more time to address the community needs while keeping pace with the public expectancy to complete services via the Internet," Ritter said.

The web based crime reporting system is available at www.gwinnettpolice.com.
