Suspicious Vehicle Call Ends in Drug Arrest

A Buford man is facing multiple charges after a Feb. 19 incident in Dacula.

A concerned citizen called police at approximately 8:30 p.m. after noticing two suspicious vehicles at the on Braselton Highway. The caller advised that a drug transaction appeared to be taking place. The caller also reported seeing one of the vehicle occupants rolling “some type of illegal substance.”

An officer pulled into the gas station parking lot and saw a white Ford Mustang and a silver Toyota RAV4 with two men standing nearby. According to the police report, both men got back in their respective vehicles when they saw the patrol car. The white Mustang immediately left the scene and the officer followed.

While following the Mustang north on Braselton Highway, the officer noticed the vehicle twice fail to maintain its lane of travel. The officer initiated a traffic stop and the driver of the Mustang pulled into the parking lot.

The driver of the vehicle, Tyler Vreeland, 19, of 2675 Matlin Way in Buford, said he had just dropped off a friend at the Valero and was going to Burger King to get a bite to eat. While speaking with Vreeland, the officer noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

When questioned by the officer, Vreeland denied having anything illegal inside his vehicle. Vreeland gave officers permission to search his vehicle and he and his two passengers also consented to be searched.

During the vehicle search, the officer noticed the cup holders in the center console did not appear to be properly seated. The officer lifted the cup holders and found a bag of green, leafy material that later field-tested positive for marijuana. The officer also found an open beer bottle and two scales, both of which appeared to have marijuana residue on them.

Vreeland admitted the marijuana was his and was placed under arrest. He was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, failure to maintain lane and an open container violation. He was released from jail the following day on a $6,057 bond.
