Swimmer Reported Missing at Lake Lanier

Underwater search for missing man unsuccessful.

A search for a missing swimmer has been suspended until tomorrow morning.

Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services (GCFES) personnel were called to Lake Lanier shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday evening in response to a report of a missing swimmer.

According to a GCFES press release, bystanders reported seeing a friend wading in the water approximately two hours earlier. The bystanders said the man could not swim and was not wearing a life jacket.

Swift water personnel spotted what appeared to be a person’s body under the water. GCFES requested assistance from Hall County’s dive team due to the fact the body was out of reach of the crew.

GCFES swift water and the Hall County dive team conducted an underwater search, but were unable to locate the victim.

“The search has been called off for the night, and the scene has been turned over to DNR,” said GCFES acting public information officer Lt. Eric Eberly in a released statement.

The search will resume tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. Gwinnett County crews will assist in the recovery effort, Eberly said.
