Woman Loses $6K in Vacation Rental Scam

The Dacula woman said she sent money to rent property only to learn that the online ad was fraudulent.

A 55-year-old Dacula woman is several thousand dollars poorer after falling prey to an online scam.

On June 10, the woman paid $6,025 in the form of a bank-to-bank transfer to purchase a one-week stay at a Florida rental property in response to an advertisement on a vacation rental website. After the woman transferred the funds, the administrators of the website removed the ad and indicated they believed the offer was fraudulent.

The woman was able to make contact with the individual who posted the ad. The poster assured the woman there had been a mistake and promised the money would be refunded. After the refund failed to arrive, the woman contacted the poster again. The poster then asked the woman to provide her Pay Pal account information and promised to refund the money directly to her account. The woman complied and received a confirmation that the funds had been transferred, but later learned it was not a legitimate communication from Pay Pal.
