Budget Cuts, Tax Digest Corrections on Agenda

Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners scheduled to vote on several cost saving measures.

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners will meet Tuesday to consider several cost saving measures, including furlough days for county employees.

The county announced Friday that it is considering for county workers to help eliminate the county's  budget deficit.

According to officials, converting Independence Day, Labor Day, the Friday after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve to unpaid furlough days would save about $2.8 million, and that all measures being considered would leave Gwinnett about $2.6 million short of covering its general fund shortfall.

Other measures under consideration by the county:

  • Reducing contributions to its Risk Management and Workers Compensation funds and its Fleet/Equipment Capital Project Fund.
  • Eliminating seven vacant positions, the ad budget for vacant positions, and cutting part-time salaries in the police department.
  • Paying off a 2002 general obligation bond and redirecting the .23 mill tax levy that had been servicing that debt toward general operations.

A $3.4 million correction to the is also on the March 1 agenda. Commissionerswill vote on whether to approve changes to the digest including in-additions, deletions and errors. The correction covers the 2004-2010 tax years.

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners meets at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive, Lawrenceville. The March 1 meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
