Building Demolition, Leaf Truck on Council Agenda

Dacula City Council to meet Thursday night.

Dacula City council members will decide Thursday whether to spend as much as $35,000 on a new leaf truck for the city or repair the existing truck. The city’s current vehicle, which is 25 years old, recently suffered what City Administrator Jim Osborn described as a “catastrophic” transmission failure. The cost to repair the transmission would equal or exceed the value of the vehicle, Osborn said.

During last week's work session, councilwoman Sue Robinson said she would find it hard to agree to purchase a new vehicle given the current economic conditions and suggested purchasing a late model used vehicle. said given the age of the vehicle, it is important to consider the possibility of more mechanical difficulties but said he believed it was more fiscally responsible at this time to repair the truck.

The council will also consider whether to proceed with plans for a . A major concern regarding the proposed plan has been whether the new design would allow buses to safely turn on and off of Second Avenue. During last week’s city council work session, the council reviewed diagrams showing the turning radii for several different bus lengths and the clearance the new design would leave. Early estimates placed the project costs at $120,000.

Also on Thursday’s agenda is an authorization to demolish a city owned building on Second Avenue. At the time of last week's city council work session, downtown property owner Sam Hinton had not signed a temporary easement allowing city crews to access his land for the purpose of demolishing the building on the city’s adjacent property. Earlier this week, Hinton’s attorney Denise Griffin said her client intended to sign the easement after a few revisions were made. At 9 a.m. on April 6, Mayor Wilbanks said, to the best of his knowledge, the easement had still not been signed.

An executive session to discuss real estate is also on the agenda.
