Condemned Building Demolished

Land to be cleared for downtown gathering space.

A condemned building on city property in downtown Dacula has been reduced to rubble.

City crews began demolition work Monday morning. By noon, the building had been taken to the ground and clean up work was underway.

Dacula said crews are clearing the lot in preparation for the city’s Memorial Day celebrations.

The demolition work took place on one of three downtown lots owned by the city. The combined half-acre tract was purchased in December of 2010 for $167,000 for or gathering space. City officials have discussed ideas for the downtown space, but have not yet formalized any plans.

Mayor Wilbanks said if council approves, the city will likely construct a pavilion or a gazebo, walkways and perhaps some additional parking spaces.
