Council Approves Liquor License Application, Scoring Criteria

The liquor store license application is finalized and the scoring criteria have been set. Now, the waiting begins.

From Jan. 7 through Jan. 22, parties interested in becoming the City of Dacula’s sole liquor store licensee must submit an extensive application, pay the applicable fees, undergo a criminal background check and prepare a presentation for the Dacula City Council.

Then, on Jan. 30, those interested in being the licensee will have the opportunity to make their case before the council in a called meeting. The presentation, along with the application, will be scored by council members with a lower score indicating a higher ranking. City Administrator Jim Osborn explained the lowest scoring applicant will not necessarily be selected as the licensee.

“But it will be a good indicator,” he said.

The following day, Dacula residents should learn who the owner and operator of the city’s first, and for now only, liquor store will be. Council is set to vote on the matter at 6 p.m. on Jan. 31.

In other business during the Jan. 3 Dacula City Council meeting:

• Councilwoman Sue Robinson was appointed as Mayor Pro Tem for 2013.
• Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks named his committee appointments for 2013.  Those appointments are: Mark Chandler, City Chaplin; Ellis Lamme, Citizens' SPLOST Review Committee representative; Wendell Holcombe, Finance and Building Improvements; Sue Robinson, Building Inspections and Parks and Recreation; Hubert Wells, Sanitation/Maintenance and the Marshal’s Office; and Gregory Reeves, Planning Commission and Streets, Alleys and Sidewalks. Mayor Wilbanks and the entire council will serve on the Site Development and Development Authority Committees.
• Council unanimously approved a 7-year intergovernmental agreement with Gwinnett County related to the use of the county’s 800 MHz radio system.
• Council also unanimously approved the appointments of Trey King, Betty Hale, Randy Franklin, Paul Sims and Mark Chandler to the Planning and Zoning Board.
• Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks and council recognized Dacula Middle School pageant winners Caitlin Piland (Junior Miss Dacula), Emmaline Farmer (Young Miss Dacula) and Brook Pere (Teen Miss Dacula).
