Council Approves Sunday Sales Referendums

Voters will decide in November whether to allow package sales and liquor by the drink sales on Sunday.

Later this year, voters within the Dacula City limits will head to the polls to decide two issues related to the sale of alcohol on Sundays.

On June 2, the Dacula City Council authorized .

The first referendum, in which voters will decide whether to allow Sunday package sales, was approved by a 2-1 margin. Council members Gregory Reeves and Sue Robinson voted in favor of holding the referendum and councilman Wendell Holcombe voted against. Councilman Tim Montgomery was absent.

The second referendum, which will allow voters to decide if Sunday sales of liquor by the drink will be permitted in restaurants within the city limits, was also approved by a 2-1 margin with Reeves and Robinson voting in favor and Holcombe voting in opposition.

Now the final decision will rest in the hands of the voters.

“It will not happen if it’s not approved by more than one half of the voters who vote in this election,” Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks said.

If the measures pass, package sales and liquor by the drink sales would be allowed in Dacula between the hours of 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Sundays.
