Jehovah's Witnesses Request Back on BOC Agenda

For the second time in less than three years, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners will be asked to decide if the Jehovah's Witnesses will be allowed to build a church on their Dacula property.

The special use permit request is scheduled to go before the county commission on Tuesday, Oct. 22. The request was originally set to be heard in September, but the issue was tabled in order to give neighbors and the applicants more time to discuss concerns about the proposed church location.

In September, the Gwinnett County Planning Commission voted 8-0 to recommend approval for the special use permit which would allow the Jehovah's Witnesses to build a 5,000-square-foot church on their property located in the 1500 block of Ace McMillian Road. 

The vote was the second time the planning commission has recommended the request be approved. In 2011, however, the request failed to muster enough support at the county commission level and the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners voted 3-1 to deny the request.

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners meets at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville. The Oct. 22 meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
