Open Letter to Residents of District 93, from State Representative

Rep. Dar'shun Kendrick addresses concerns expressed by residents of District 93 regarding a lack of town hall meetings in Gwinnett.

(Editor's note: the following is a letter to the editor from State Rep. Dar'shun Kendrick.)

I have heard from many of you your concern about my vigorous support of a series of town hall meetings that were planned in DeKalb County but no indication of when I would host a town hall meeting in Gwinnett. Please allow me to succinctly address those concerns.

I will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting in Gwinnett, possibly along with other legislators, in February, after I obtain a good grasp of the issues under the Gold Dome. However, let me explain briefly the reason for my constant promotion of the town hall meetings in DeKalb.

First, the town hall meetings in DeKalb and not being hosted by me personally but by the DeKalb House Delegation. I am the Secretary of the DeKalb House Delegation. Therefore, it is my job to make sure the information gets out to the public about the meetings.

In turn, my constant communications about the DeKalb House Delegation Town Hall meetings is tied to my duties as Secretary of the Delegation and may seem extremely heightened by that fact. Additionally, the DeKalb County Charter requires that DeKalb host town hall meetings before session, so we were required by law to have these meetings before Session began.

I don't have the authority to call a Gwinnett County House Delegation Town Hall meeting as I am not the Chairman, however, as I stated before, I will hold one in February sometime. Please feel free to sign up for my enewsletter to be the first to know the details at www.kendrickforgeorgia.com.

I am very excited to represent Gwinnett county. Please understand that you are not far from my thoughts. I look forward to seeing many of you in February. Thank you for allowing me to serve.

Rep. Dar'shun N. Kendrick

State Representative (House District 93)

Secretary (Appointed), DeKalb House Delegation

Representative Kendrick was one of the keynote speakers at Tuesday's Snellville Commerce Club meeting. I know Representative Kendrick and I don't see eye to eye on many issues, just as I don't always agree with Representative Harrell, but she took time out of her busy schedule to answer questions. She was very gracious and stayed after the meeting to answer questions. Last I checked Snellville is still in Gwinnett county.

I haven't heard any complaints about a lack of town hall meetings in Gwinnett, but that doesn't really mean anything. I was surprised that there was an issue, because I know she speaks at many different places and is always available to answer questions.

I doubt Rep. Kendrick meant to imply that any that represent Gwinnett failed to reach out to our constituents. Just this week I participated in a Lawrenceville Town Hall meeting with Reps. Valerie Clark and Rep-elect Joyce Chandler on Monday. As Mr. Warner indicated above, on Tuesday I spoke with the Snellville Commerce Club with Rep. Kendrick standing by my side. Just this evening, I joined Rep-elect Joyce Chandler for a Town Hall meeting in Grayson. On Tuesday evening, Gwinnett Rep. Buzz Brockway conducted a unique online Town Hall meeting featuring video, audio, and "live chat" questions and answers. Rep. Kendrick is a welcome addition to our 18 member Gwinnett delegation. I was recently honored to be selected Chair of the Gwinnett House delegation. Should any citizens desire additional information on their representative or community meetings, please feel free to contact me and I'll connect you with your Rep. and be sure you are well informed of upcoming meetings and issues pending before the Georgia House. Thank you all for your comments. There was never an issue about other Gwinnett representatives representing their constituents----the issue was specifically with me and why I hadn't had one yet prior to session but seemed to always be promoting the DeKalb House Delegation meetings (which, as I explained above, I'm Secretary so that's my job). Some seemed to be confused and thought I had the authority to make the whole Gwinnett County Delegation hold a joint meeting like we do in DeKalb and I had to explain that DeKalb's Charter is WAY different than Gwinnett on that issue.
