In other business, council discussed a proposed amendment to the city’s zoning resolution. The amendment would place additional restrictions on temporary outdoor uses such as events held in the parking lots of city businesses. According to Joey Murphy, Director of Planning and Development for the City of Dacula, permit requests for these type of events have become excessive.

“Bottom line, these are parking lots, not party lots,” Murphy said.

If council approves the proposed amendment, businesses would be limited to one event per calendar month not to exceed five per year. Businesses would be required to pay a $50 fee and submit a two-page application. Additionally, businesses would be required to hire two P.O.S.T. certified officers for any event at which alcohol is served and comply with all provisions of the city’s alcohol and noise ordinances.

Murphy said amending the resolution was necessary.

“We don’t have the ordinances to back citations for violations,” he said.

Other items discussed during Thursday’s work session included:

  • A request to rezone a 4.28-acre piece of property on Harbins Road from single family residential to office institutional. The 1,500-square-foot home will be used as a personal care facility.
