Red Oak Sanitation Reaches Settlement

Former customers may be due a refund.

Former Gwinnett County customers of Red Oak Sanitation may be due a refund as part of a settlement reached with the Governor’s Office of Consumer Protection (OCP).

Red Oak provided private sanitation services to Dacula and Gwinnett County residents until the county implemented its in July of 2010. Red Oak was not selected as one of the five haulers authorized by Gwinnett County to provide sanitation services.

When the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners revoked Red Oak’s authority to provide waste collection services, the company was supposed to collect its trash bins and provide a refund of each customer's $25 or $50 deposit. An OCP investigation revealed the company failed to do this in a timely manner.

As a result of the OCP investigation, Red Oak has agreed to establish a trust account for customers who have not yet received refunds of their deposits. So far, the company has refunded almost $60,000. Customers seeking a refund should contact Red Oak directly at 678-455-7819.

Prior to the implementation of the countywide trash plan, Red Oak served fewer than 5,000 Gwinnett customers. The company was one of nine haulers authorized to provide waste collection services in Gwinnett before the county’s new solid waste ordinance went into effect.
