School Taxes Set to Increase

By Joy L. Woodson

The state's largest school district has voted to increase taxes for homeowners in Gwinnett County.

The measure was approved at the school board's monthly business meeting on June 20. It was deemed necessary to fund the 2013-2014 budget, approved at $1.8 billion.

The 1.3 mill increase amounts to about $76 more in school taxes for the owner of a home valued at $150,000, according to school district officials.

It is the first tax increase for Gwinnett County Public Schools in eight years. Officials cite the declining property tax digest as a major reason for the tax increase.
