Sewer Project to Cost $556K, County Expected to Foot Portion of the Bill

The Dacula City Council awarded the bid contingent upon Gwinnett County approving the payment of a portion of the project.

A vote to award a bid for a sewer project, which a councilman described as one of the most important votes the Dacula City Council has ever made, passed during the June 6 Dacula City Council meeting with one important condition.

The condition is that Gwinnett County approve payment of a portion of the total cost. Three companies bid on the project, the lowest of which was Strickland and Sons in the amount of $556,372. Gwinnett County, according to City Administrator Jim Osborn, is expected to contribute roughly $136,500 to the project.

The gravity sewer project along Hopkins Creek phase I to Lakeside Drive will bring sewer to an area of Dacula that has previously relied on septic and stimulate economic development, Osborn said.

The city's portion of the project cost will be partially funded from the 2009 SPLOST and partly from the city's reserve fund.

"This is probably one of the most important votes we've ever made for the city here," said Dacula City Councilman Hubert Wells. "The future of Dacula depends on this."
