Sheldon Urges Caution Regarding Regional Transit

Proposed legislation would create metro Atlanta transportation system.

Rep. Donna Sheldon (R-Dacula) is urging lawmakers to exercise caution as they consider legislation aimed at creating a regional transit system in metro Atlanta.

Sheldon, chair of the Transit Governance Study Commission, commended the work of the Atlanta Regional Commission’s (ARC) Regional Transit Committee (RTC), but said the creation of a regional transit governance authority was a major undertaking that should not be rushed.

“While this issue needs to be addressed quickly, it must also be done carefully and cautiously,” Sheldon said in a released statement.  “It would be premature for either the Transit Governance Study Commission or the General Assembly to move forward with the RTC’s proposal until it has been thoroughly vetted.  I look forward to working with the other members of the Transit Governance Study Commission during the interim, as we study this proposal and work toward bringing the area’s various transit systems together under one effective governance authority.”

The RTC submitted conceptual legislation to the General Assembly earlier this year proposing guidelines and principles to be followed in creating a governing structure for an Atlanta metro-wide regional transit system.
