Three Questions With the Mayor: New Sign, Liquor License Application Period and Dacula Business Vision

In this week's "Three Questions With the Mayor," Dacula Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks provides an update on the latest city news and discusses what type of new business he would like to see in Dacula.

Dacula Patch: What's new in Dacula this week?

Mayor Wilbanks: A new electronic sign arrived at the Dacula City Hall this past Saturday. This installation replaces the old manual sign while reusing the familiar monument structure. In the next few day, city staff will be trained in the use of the sign, and it will become fully operational. The City Council authorized the new sign as a part of the Mayor and City Council's effort for communicating with Dacula residents. Using the electronic sign will make it faster, easier, and more economical to post timely announcements for our residents. Also see the latest happening in the City at daculaga.gov. The sign is not a replacement for how the City is legally required to advertise meetings and the like. While the information posted on the sign will make it easier, citizens have a responsibility to invest the time and energy to find out what is happening at City Hall. 

Dacula Patch: What is something Dacula residents need to know this week?

Mayor Wilbanks: The City begins receiving applications for the, one and currently only, liquor store license beginning today, Jan. 7, 2013. The application period will be through Jan. 22, 2013. Oral presentations will be heard by the City Council at a special called work session on Jan. 30, 2013 beginning at 5 p.m. The liquor store applicant to receive the license will be chosen at a special called council meeting on Jan. 31, 2013 at 6 p.m. to be followed by the regular monthly council work session at 7 p.m. Applicants must provide a $500 administrative/investigative fee and a $6,000 license fee at the time the application is filed with the City. The administrative/investigative fee is non-refundable. The license fee is refundable if the applicant is not chosen to receive the license.

Dacula Patch: Dacula has grown considerably over the past few years with the addition of several new restaurants and retailers. Soon the city will also have its first liquor store and possibly a large live, work, play community. What type of business would you like to see locate in Dacula at this point?

Mayor Wilbanks: Certainly, the City has grown over the last decade, and we are blessed to have a number of new establishments that complement our community. I would like to see additional sit-down restaurants, additional retailers, and above all in our new potential mixed use development, I would like to see businesses that would provide additional job opportunities for our City and community. The kinds of things I am looking for are offices of regional or national companies, light, green manufacturing, and biotechnical companies that complement Georgia’s innovation crescent project along Georgia 316 from Athens to Atlanta. After all Dacula is at the center of Georgia’s innovation crescent.
