TSPLOST Public Meeting to Be Held Monday

Area residents will have the opportunity Monday, Sept. 26, to provide input regarding a draft list of transportation projects to be funded with a .

The executive committee of the Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable . The must now be approved by the full 21-member Roundtable by Oct. 15 before being submitted to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Before the list is finalized, metro area residents are being invited to provide feedback on the draft list.

“Roundtable members have already heard from more than 200,000 citizens and have worked very hard to develop a list of transportation investments that will give people across metro Atlanta more travel options and reduce congestion,” said Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson, Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable chairman in a released statement. “Now we need to hear from our neighbors one more time and make sure we’re putting a list on the ballot that voters can support.”

Next year, . The sales tax referendum is being held in accordance with H.B. 277, the Transportation Investment Act.

Though voters may choose not to pass the sales tax, H.B. 277 contains penalties for regions that fail to adopt the TSPLOST. If a region adopts the TSPLOST, local governments will only be required to pay 10 percent in matching funds for projects receiving funding from the Georgia Department of Transportation. If the region holds a referendum, but fails to pass the TSPLOST, local governments will be required to post 30 percent in matching funds. If the Roundtable fails to reach an agreement on the constrained list and fails to hold the referendum, local governments in the Atlanta region would be required to pay 50 percent in matching funds for state aided transportation projects.

The public input meeting will be held from 5-7 p.m. in the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center auditorium, 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville. Citizens may also provide input at www.atlantaregionalroundtable.com or by calling 404-463-3123.
