Woodall Addresses Concerns Over Social Security Payments

Congressman calls President Obama's statement that checks might not go out "absolutely false."

On the heels of remarks from President Barack Obama in which he said Social Security payments may not go out if an agreement is not reached regarding the debt ceiling, Rep. Rob Woodall (R-GA-07) has issued a video statement in an attempt to reassure concerned constituents.

"A lot of folks have been calling in today concerned about remarks the President made yesterday about the future of Social Security, and I would like to set the record straight with this video," Woodall wrote in an email to constituents.

In an interview with CBS News, the President said the federal government might not be able to pay Social Security, disability and veterans' benefits come August 3.

"I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3 if we haven't resolved this issue because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it," he said.

Woodall, whose district includes Dacula, called the President's claim "absolutely false."

"The President has it within his authority to make those decisions about how payments get made," Woodall said.
